Taylor Yards presents a challenging site due to the revitalization of the Los Angeles River and only three access roads to other urban areas. The design approach involved creating four independent layers. The Matrix, The Linears, The Field Ground, and The Solitaires and examining how they react and intersect with each other when combined.
The intersection of all four layers formed the XY axis, and the remaining two axes were designed with the sectional quality of the city in mind to create spaces that would react, act, and feel accordingly.
The city of Los Angeles is perceived as dispersed yet nurturing of natural environments and open minded cultural ambiance. However, the downtown area has failed to attract people from the neighboring communities due to the lack of activity.
Inspired by Venice and Manhattan's boroughs in New York City, the new city design features three main downtowns and a Venice like space where residential and retail meet the LA River as it enters the site.
